Identified in early research literature under the developmental code TH9507, it is chemically designated N-(trans-3-hexenoyl)-[Tyr¹]hGRF(1–44)NH₂. Its defining structural feature is an N-terminal trans-3-hexenoyl acylation on the terminal tyrosine residue — the modification that distinguishes tesamorelin as a discrete chemical entity within the broader GHRH-analogue family (CAS 218949-48-5).

In preclinical literature, tesamorelin has been studied for its agonist activity at the growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRHR) expressed on anterior-pituitary somatotrophs.
