Bacteriostatic Water (BW) is sterile, highly purified water preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth and allows a single vial to be drawn from repeatedly over an extended period. It is the standard reconstitution solution for lyophilized peptide research compounds, providing a stable, preserved aqueous medium for dissolving peptide powders without accelerating degradation. Research Application
Proper reconstitution is critical to peptide research validity. Bacteriostatic water is preferred over preservative-free diluent for multi-draw vials because the 0.9% benzyl alcohol prevents microbial contamination after the septum is first punctured. Key reconstitution guidelines for peptide research:
- Allow the lyophilized peptide vial to reach room temperature before adding BW
- Add BW slowly by directing the stream down the glass wall of the vial — do not dispense directly onto the peptide cake
- Gently swirl — do not shake or vortex — to dissolve the peptide
- Allow the solution to sit for 2–5 minutes if not fully dissolved; do not apply heat
- Once reconstituted, store at 2–8°C and use within 28 days (standard BW multi-draw window)
